They work by boosting fuel rail pressure along with turbo boost. They do work
It's entirely up to pal, but the 1.2 is a very fragile engine without a remap

Not sure if you've had much joy in getting this sorted but I'd go for the left hand stalk and replace it. Steering wheel has to be removed for access.
