My low fuel light came on today display said I had 56 miles to go until empty.
I did 5 miles and display went to --------
Think the fuel to miles left to empty is a bit out

no, its a lot out.
It should be a 46 litre tank and if I fill up when the display goes to ---- then I can get 36 litres in so 10 litres left which is a significant portion of the range.

Also when I fill up the range never goes above 290.
On 45 miles remaining I can only get around £36 of fuel in to fill up

Yes - 36 ltrs is about the max I can get in the tank. Display usually shows 490 miles to next fill up.

35/36 litres max fill for me too. Approx 10 litres in the tank with estimated 40 miles to empty is ridiculous.

Is it such a problem ?the upside is you are never going to run out of fuel, yes i know it's a nuisance but if the gauge showed more fuel than you actually have you are in danger of running out! and murphies law would have it happen on a cold wet night with a long walk/wait for assistance (:

It's more of an irritation than a major problem. Every other car I've owned, where it had a low fuel warning, gave a reasonably accurate indication, on the gauge and on the remaining mileage figure, with about 50 miles of fuel left. A system where both gauge and remaining mileage are wildly pessimistic just seems like another instance of 'nannying' people. Just like the display of how much CO2 saved and telling you when to change gear.
I think all any of us are asking for is accurate figures and guages. What's next, a system which links to sat nav to keep you 5 mph under the speed limit for safety????

I thought the petrol models had 36 litre tank capacity.
