I agree with the bit about Nissan making a quality car, but when you see all the problems with engines since Renault got involved it has to make you stop and think. I've had Nissans since the early 90s and they have been bomb proof. Worst problems I had were the emissions sensor on a Micra playing silly beggars and the starter motor on a Primera failing (that was a known fault and replaced under warranty). I don't have the same level of confidence in the Pulsar and that is directly down to Renault involvement. Modern collaborations seems to be about reducing price rather than worrying too much about quality.

I’ve only had one car that wasn’t a Nissan, with the first one being a cherry in 1982, followed by micras, sunny and almeras - had the sensor replaced in a micra, but my starter motor was for the sunny. All great, reliable cars that gave me good service, and paid for themselves over and over again.
I’m hoping the Pulsar will prove reliable, so far I’ve had a new battery and the air con fixed, both under warranty, which runs out soon, and then I’m on my own.
I won’t be changing unless it becomes an unreliable Renault !

I thought micra and notes were 3cylinder and Pulsar 4cylinder? Why would they be having the same issues unless it's turbo related or similar? My original 1.6 Note was 4cylinder but the dealer ones we drove sounded feeble on its 3. If the dealer had a 1.6 Pulsar I would have taken it in a heartbeat but I just went out shopping on the back of a bereavement so didn't know.
Love my 1.2 so far.

Hello fellow 1.2 owners, I also was disappointed to find out my 1.2 Pulsar has the same appalling engine that was fitted to my previous car ( Renault Captur 1.2) , the Captur engine started to use oil at only about 1,500 miles or so and had numerous software updates to try and cure the oil consumption. The Captur was my first new car and the most unreliable car I've ever owned in over 50 years of driving , and I've owned some real bangers in my time.

The first Jap car I owned was a Datsun 120Y which was 100% reliable but rusted away before my eyes !! The Nissan Bluebird front wheel drive version I owned was reliable and rust free and easy to drive, my Note was a 4 cylinder version.

I didn't know any of the Nissan Notes were turbocharged ,I thought the S version had a supercharger.

When I bought my Captur ,pre-reg model with 5 miles on the clock ,the dealers fitted a new battery and updated the software even before I had taken it away as they informed me there were a number of faulty batteries and engine software updates for which I was grateful they had acted responsibly.

All the best from Neale.

The engine fitted to the Pulsar is a 1.2 4 cyl turbo engine, or DIG-T, code HR12DDT, or its Renault code, the H5Ft

The Micra K13 and Note run a 1.2 engine, 3 cyl with a supercharger or DIG-S engine, code HR12DDR. They also run a miller cycle to reduce compression stoke losses during light/constant load.

Whilst Nissan decided to give the engines the same family code (HR) and both DIG type engines, thats the only similarity really!

Incidentally, the reason I went for the 1.6DIG-T was because I have read it was more of a Nissan engine and has been around for a while in Nissan cars, (MR16DDT), however Renault did add their influence. The Renault engine code for their version of the 1.6DIG-T is M5M

Although the latest build of Micra, the K14 is now fitted with a new type of 3cyl turbo IG-T engine which I belive from research, shows that its another Renault based engine, the H4Bt 0.9L turbo 3 cyl engine. I am unable to find a Nissan family code for this, but I dare say its going to be in the HR family.

I belive any Nissan with an engine code starting with HR is going to be a 'Renault/Nissan joint venture' based engine.

I’d read the 1.6 is more of a Nissan too.

I purchased my 1.2Ntec in November 2016.It was registered march 2016 and had sat in the showroom from march till i came along .I took it for a test drive and there was less than 20 miles on the clock .I liked the car all be it a little on the large side for my wife but heyho! i was the main driver!!

It suffered the usual problem of bogging down just when you needed the boost for a quick getaway but that improved with running and getting used to the car plus a software upgrade and it soon became all most un noticeable.

Around january after reading much about the engine and Nissan deciding to stop selling the Pulsar in the UK I decided to make a change of car,I bought a new 18 plate Kia. a week after taking delivery i passed the garage and noticed that they had the sold sign on my old car, today i see that it is now back for sale with the main dealer where i bought it! makes me wander what is wrong with it ,did i do the right thing in getting shot when i did and why did the new owner move it on? the 3 year warranty runs out next march.

When i bought it i did not relise the engine was Renault/Nissan had i known i would have walked away.I never had much confidence
in French cars/engines.So after much soul searching i decided to trade it in,there were many things i liked about it,it was comfortable, nippy and very quiet although not overly economical except on long runs.My Kia 1l turbo is returning 48-50mpg around town driving.

Knowing my luck if i had kept it ,the warranty would have expired and then the engine would have followed it, and then it would have been hassle time getting Nissan to do something with it under goodwill without warranty,my experiance with Nissan goodwill was not good when i tried to get them to update the sat nav foc.

So at the end of the day because Nissan seem to have not got this sorted and popping back here today to see the posts that have been made since i changed cars about the 1.2 engine i'm glad i did change.

I have updated the original post as I located a Relault engine code for it, M5M. It seems as though the MR range is another shared engine. It *appears* to have Nissan origins unlike the 1.2DIG-T engine, and has been around far longer with the American's getting some reasonable power out of them.

I should consider splitting it into its own topic really!

Yes we’ve just received the news that our Pulsar needs a new engine! It is a 64 plate with not too many miles on the clock. Despite the fact oil was low at service in the year this wasn’t looked into. Only when we had a new battery fitted 6 weeks ago and theAA man checked the oil did it start alarm bells. It is out of warranty and we have been quoted £7k - £8k for new engine.

i would push them harder, esp as its not long after warranty.

You have up to 6 years to claim manuf issue, yes you have to prove it yourself, but given there is plenty of evidence around that this is the case...
