Stop/Start functionality

Post by themanc » Wed Jul 18, 2018 12:05 pm

Hi all,
My first post after recently purchasing a Pulsar. So far, so good and well impressed.

Its 3.5 years old and bought from WestWay NIssan with 100 point check and service prior to me collecting.

However, before I contact them I was wondering if someone can help me.

My Stop/Start seems a bit sporadic. I have so far only been using it for short journies to and from work, but sometimes when i stop at traffic lights, put it in neutral and handbrake on, the engine still runs.

I have read the manual and see some of the potential reasons, but would have thought there will be no issues with battery etc after 1 week.

Someone did tell me that it only starts kicking in after a short while, that it needs to have been running for a short while first.

Is that true?

Its a feature that only works when the engine is warmed up. If you think it is more of a problem than that, take it back, and see what they have to say. Mine is 8 weeks old and I'm not fussed on having engine stopped every time I stop. Slowly getting into the habit of knocking it off on the switch. It gives me more of a feeling of being in control. Good luck, and enjoy.

I feel sure it says in the handbook you have to have driven over a mile, the engine warm and battery not under heavy load.

It also has a habit of working when it feels like it....

That just about sums up operation of Stop/Start on the Pulsar. The guy in service reception at my local dealership said most people complain because it stops working at all rather than complaining about it working intermittently. Tells you all you need to know really!

i had this in a 14 plate juke i had i bought the car for the car, the stop start to me was a hinderence so i switch it off. Likewise in my pulsar and the wifes new juke, its intermittant at best and you cant really save much fuel, so i got in the habit of switching it off every time i start up. i wish you could just switch the damn thing off permanently.

I'm not bothered about it not stopping. What freaks me out is when it just randomly starts again... is that normal? Even if air con isn't on just the DAB it will randomly start and if I'm just sat waiting for the husband (normally) I nearly jump out of my seat. Nearly died when it did it today, even the woman sat outside beside me gave me a look like "why's she starting her car..."

There's many contributing factors why the stop start will sometimes work and sometimes not e.g in this boiling heat I've got my fans on full whack and until I popped it to auto and 20c it was not functioning also many other factors that the ecu will be monitoring, brake vacuum drivers seat belt engaged, I did have a list of all the reasons that will stop it from functioning

Does it turning itself back on fit into that though? Is it just a normal thing? I wish it would beep or something beforehand lol I'm always just sat like JESUS WTF WAS THAT. First time it happened after a long drive, only had it a couple of weeks. We pulled over to check into the place we went. I just put it in neutral and we discussed where to park then it turned back on and I honestly thought it had blown up or something... haha

Operation of the system seems to be totally random. I do the same journey at the same time each weekday. Even in very similar weather conditions, with the same stuff in use in the car, it's pot luck whether Stop/Start kicks in. There is no logic that I can see as far as operation is concerned.

I have a 1.2 petrol automatic Pulsar.

The stop/start failed completely for 2 months last year and then functioned normally just before a service. It's a bit hit or miss, but shifting to neutral (with foot hard on footbrake) sometimes stops the engine which always starts as soon as pressure on footbrake is released. The engine also starts immediately the steering wheel is moved.
