2016 pulsar bonnet

Post by mushira184 » Tue Nov 19, 2019 5:27 pm

hi all just got my car a month ago. was driving along motorway and reached 80mph and bonnet flew open smashing windscreen roof wings. I havent opened bonnet since i have got it and have not accidently opened either so wondering how it could have opened. itll be back from garage soon and i am really anxious to take it on motorway again in case it opens. Any ideas how it might have opened? have been on motorway a few times in last month and nothing happened.

That obviously shouldn't be able to happen. The most likely scenario is that the bonnet hadn't been fully closed after it was last opened and the wind eventually caught in the gap left. Even if the bonnet wasn't fully secured, the secondary catch should have retained it.

maybe you caught the release when trying to open the filler cap when filling up with fuel? Easily done as they are next to each other...

Although as above, the 2nd catch should have prevented, but 80mph is quite a speed with a lot of wind force, and with the bonnet bouncing, maybe it weakened or damaged that catch enough for it to fail.

Either way, its an unusual thing to happen!!

Poorly greased/maintained latch can cause the latch from fully engaging when closed, should be done when serviced so worth a look to see if it's been lubed.

Or more commonly, you've accidentally caught the release when you last fueled up, so many cars come in on the secondary latch its unreal.

Secondary latch will hold the bonnet at low normal speed, but enough wind under the bonnet will eventually cause something to let go.

I do feel for you for having this terrifying experience:(
